Polymer/nano-sized
particle composites have attracted considerable attention by the researchers because of
their unique physical properties,such as nonlinear optical,electronic,magnetic and
mechanical properties[1~ 3].However,the nano-sized inorganic particles are difficult to
disperse uniformly in the polymer matrix,which is attributed to their high surface
energies and easily reuniting.Recently,some new approaches,such as sol-gel
processing,intercalative polymerization and in-situ polymerization,have been developed to
modify the inorganic particulate surface for producing the high-performance
composites[4,5].In the present study,the in-situ polymerization of methyl methacrylate
(MMA) on the surface of the nano-sized antimony oxide(Sb2O3) particles was performed by
using the batch seed emulsion process,where the Sb2O3 nano-particles are coated by PMMA.It
is expected that the PMMAs covered on the surface of inorganic nano-particles not only
resolve the problem of nano-particles aggregating,enhance the dispersion of the particles
in the polymer matrix,but also improve the compatibility between the inorganic nano-sized
filler and the polymer matrix. |
